Signs Your Garage Door Needs Replacing

The door sections are what you're really paying for. If they're sound, almost any other failure can be repaired. If they're not, new hardware on a failing door is money you won't get back.

Signs the door itself is worn out:

• Rust eating through the bottom section, where water sits and the lift cables attach.
• Cracks spreading from the hinge fasteners, especially on thin steel doors that have been hit.
• An insulated door with the steel skin separating from the core, so the sections flex.
• Dents or impact damage across more than one or two sections.
• A wood door that has soaked up enough water to gain weight and throw off the balance.
• A door old enough that matching replacement sections are no longer made.

What You Gain With a New Garage Door

A new door is a chance to fix what the old one got wrong. Doors too light for the opening, single-layer doors on attached garages, and openings that were never reinforced for an opener all get corrected on the new install.

It's also the easiest time to add insulation, change the style or switch to a quieter belt drive opener, because the old door is already coming out.
