What Your Garage Door Noise Means

Each sound points to a different part:

  • Grinding or scraping that follows the door up and down: worn rollers, or the door dragging against the track.
  • Squealing or chirping: dry hinges, rollers or bearings that need lubrication.
  • A bang or pop at the same spot every time: a roller hitting a damaged section of track, or a cable jumping on the drum.
  • Rattling the whole way up and down: loose hardware. Hinges, track brackets and the opener rail all work loose over years of vibration.
  • A deep grinding from the opener itself: the drive gear stripping.
  • A slam in the last foot of travel: the door is out of balance and the springs have lost tension.
  • A single loud bang, once: that's a spring breaking, and the door won't open afterward.

How We Quiet a Noisy Garage Door

Swapping bare steel rollers for nylon rollers with sealed bearings is the biggest improvement on most doors. Proper lubrication of hinges, bearings and springs comes next, and tightening every bolt on the door and track costs nothing.

If the opener is the loud part, a belt drive opener in place of a chain drive makes a real difference. That matters most with a bedroom over the garage, a common layout in newer tract homes across the Inland Empire and south Orange County.

Garage Door Noises That Mean Stop Using the Door

Most garage door noise is a maintenance issue. Two sounds aren't. A single loud bang followed by a door that won't lift is a broken spring. Grinding from the opener while the door doesn't move is the opener stripping its drive gear.

What is the easiest way to make my garage door quieter?

Tighten all the hardware and lubricate the hinges, rollers and bearings with a garage door lubricant. If it's still loud after that, new nylon rollers are the next step and usually do the trick.

Why is my garage door louder in the morning?

Cold metal is stiffer and lubricant thickens overnight, so a door that needs service tends to complain most on its first run of the day. It's a sign the door is due for a tune-up rather than a separate problem.

Why is my garage door making a grinding noise?

Grinding that follows the door up and down usually means worn rollers or the door rubbing on the track. Grinding from the opener itself usually means a worn drive gear. Either way it gets worse with use, so call us and we'll pinpoint it.
