California's Garage Door Battery Backup Law (SB-969)

SB-969 took effect on July 1, 2019. Residential garage door openers sold or installed in California must include a battery backup that runs the door when the power is out.

The law came out of wildfire evacuations, where families lost power and couldn't get their cars out of closed garages. Anyone who has hunted for a release cord in the dark with smoke outside understands why.

Openers installed before that date don't have to be replaced. When you do replace one, the new opener must include battery backup.

How Battery Backup Works During an Outage

The backup is a sealed battery inside the opener that keeps it running when the power is out. It's good for a limited number of open-and-close cycles, enough to get your cars out and close the door behind you.

The batteries wear out over time. Most last a few years, and the opener will usually beep or flash when it needs a new one. We can replace it quickly, or show you how.

Upgrading an Opener Installed Before 2019

You have two options. Replace the opener with a battery backup model, which can also get you a quieter belt drive and phone control. Or keep it, and make sure everyone in the house knows where the red release cord is and how to use it.

Is battery backup required on garage door openers in California?

Yes. Since July 1, 2019, residential garage door openers sold or installed in California must have battery backup under SB-969. Every opener we install includes it.

Do I have to replace my old opener to comply with SB-969?

No. The law applies when an opener is sold or installed, so an opener already in place before the rule doesn't have to be replaced. When you do replace it, the new one must have battery backup.

How long does a garage door backup battery last?

The battery usually lasts a few years before it needs replacing, and most openers beep or flash when it's time. During an outage, expect enough cycles to get your cars out, not days of normal use.
