The 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Problem With Garage Door Openers

Nearly all garage door openers connect on 2.4GHz only. Many modern routers combine 2.4GHz and 5GHz under one network name and decide which band each device gets, so the opener often can't see a network it's in range of.

The fix is usually to separate the bands during setup, or to connect the opener to a 2.4GHz guest or smart-home network. Once it's paired, it stays connected.

Weak Wi-Fi Signal in the Garage

The garage is usually the far corner of the house, and the opener sits next to a large metal door. Attached garages usually work fine. Detached garages often don't, and retrying the pairing won't change that.

When signal is the issue, a mesh node or access point in or near the garage solves it, and it also makes cameras and other garage devices work.

Garage Door App Setup and Sharing

Once the opener is online, we set up the app on your phone, turn on the alerts you want, and add family members so everyone can check and close the door.

Wi-Fi & App Garage Door Opener Setup FAQs

Why won't my garage door opener connect to Wi-Fi?

Most often it's a combined 2.4GHz and 5GHz network. Split the bands for setup, or connect to a 2.4GHz-only guest network, and it will usually pair right away. If it still won't connect, the signal in the garage may be too weak, and we can help with that.

Does my garage door need Wi-Fi to work?

No. The opener, remotes, keypad and wall button all work normally without a network. Wi-Fi only adds the phone app features.

Can you set up the garage door app for my whole family?

Yes. Once the opener is connected, we can add each family member's phone and set up alerts so everyone knows when the door opens or closes.
